OMFG. Just in case there was any doubt, Metallica know how to rock!
The day after Live Earth, back at Wembley Stadium, this time for the real thing.
First up was Machine Head. Very loud, but too messy - their sound was just a big wash of growl and if there was a tune in there somewhere, it got hidden. Just before the main act came H.I.M., who appeared to have tunes but got booed off the stage. Their cover of Wicked Game by Chris Isaak was cool though.
Then it was showtime, and what a show. These guys have a wicked rapport with the crowd, and Jo was blown away by it. They played most of the songs I wanted to hear. During one of the newer ones - I think it was The Memory Remains - James Hetfield got the crowd to sing the melody. Alone. For about two minutes straight. So loud. The band were visibly stoked by the response.
It was a very powerful performance that lived up to everything I'd ever hoped this band would be. Thanks to Jo and D for rocking with me, especially D who paid the price!
